Mysterious corridors in space lead to the discovery of an ancient civilization.
When Voyager enters a subspace corridor, the crew encounters a vessel that claims ownership. Janeway convinces the alien Captain to guide them out, and they travel 200 light years in two minutes. When the alien demands to board the ship and erase all information pertaining to the corridor, Janeway orders Voyager to a nearby planet covered in an atmosphere of radiogenic particles. Safe for the moment, the crew discovers a city in ruins from an apparent orbital bombardment over 800 years ago. Janeway’s away team finds a nuclear shelter built to draw energy from the cavern’s geothermal core. One alien, Gedrin, has survived in a stasis pod.
Gedrin explains that his species, the Vodwarr, owned the subspace corridors. When the Terray and others attacked his planet with plasma bombs, he and his battalion sought safety in stasis. Their plan was to wake in five years and start a new colony, but the controls failed. Suddenly, the Terray ships arrive, but the radiogenic particles disrupt their fire. Gedrin helps Janeway locate a satellite above the planet and use its sensors to guide Voyager’s phasers, scaring off the Terray ships. Seeing an opportunity to get his battalion off the desolate planet, Gedrin strikes a deal with Janeway; if the Voyager crew helps them escape, he will show them corridors that will get them 1,000 light years closer to home.
After reviving most of the surviving Vodwarr, Janeway searches for a planet they can re-colonize. Meanwhile, Neelix searches his Talaxian database for the word Vodwarr, which means foolish. He finds many examples of the word used in old texts of folklore. As Tuvok devises a plan for Voyager and Vodwarr assault ships to bait the Terray while the weaker vessels escape, Gedrin and his colleague, Gaul, plot an idea of their own. Instead of assisting against the Terray, they will attack Voyager as well and take over the ship’s technology and weaponry for their own.
Neelix’s Talaxian folktales uncover disturbing information about the Vodwarr. They used the subspace corridors to launch surprise attacks, destroying other worlds. Alarmed by these new facts, Janeway fears Voyager could be vulnerable to Vodwarr duplicity. When she orders Gaul to deactivate all but 10 of his vessels’ particle cannons, he angrily begins an assault.
Needing an ally against the Vodwarr, Janeway hails the Terray Captain with a proposition. In return for Voyager’s safe passage out of orbit, they will use the surveillance satellite positioned above the planet to transmit the coordinates of the Vodwarr vessels. Once Voyager is safely in orbit, Janeway learns many Vodwarr ships managed to reach the subspace corridors unharmed, meaning they haven’t seen the last of them.
